late night monday jamming... says it all by vickyguns
It's Monday night. The sun had been set for the last two hours. It had been a hot day and The Watercats had been busy digging in the virgin dirt and whittling. Their backs ached and some deep boned tiredness was creeping up under their flesh. A sick looking dog flopped down on the kitchen floor as they lifted mugs of tea to their faces and discussed the new pony delivery with it's owner. A mangy looking kid hung about in the kitchen doorway and talked about horses and the fact it didn't want to go to bed.
Outside a thick mist moved in from over the fields and brought with it a damp cold. Rain was coming. A hateful neccesity. The Watercats lit a couple of cigarettes and ushered away the youth. An astounding weariness descended over them.
Then a face appeared in the window, illuminated by the kitchen light spilling from the pane. It was a guy called Matthew 'two tees' Tull and his friend, a tree surgeon with a penchant for collecting fine guitars and singing Neil Young. They had come to jam. The Watercats had forgotten that the Thursday night jamming sessions had moved to Monday. They summoned some recessed bouts of energy and opened the door. Beers and wine were opened, more cigarettes partakened, tea brewed, news exchanged and new instruments coo'ed over. Tonight there would be a mandolin plucking.
As often happened, the moment was reached during the night where all energy was replaced by a circle of chords. Each person drifting off into a deep cushioned trance, their fingers moving over strings with a second nature. The moments became inpercievable as time and lapsed into an other worldly thing, beyond rational thought. Heads nodded, eyes closed and all musical ability fell into a childlike, topsy turvy clumsyness. It mattered not.
The Watercats night ended as predictably as an open mic night. With a terrible version of 'Knockin On Heavens Door', played with guitar, mandolin, harmonica.. and kazoo... half asleep, half cut and a mile out...
They made a scratchy recording way back then. They just don't make em like they used to...

Sounds like a great night. I could do with a bit of that myself. A terrible version? I thought it sounded pretty competent for a beer wine tea and fag-fuelled jam.
ReplyDeleteWas there a duck in there somewhere?
I agree with Dominic - sounds alright to me. I really would love to have suchlike jamming sessions. Everyone's either too busy, can't get transport or whatever. It's a shame as they're such great fun.
ReplyDeleteI truly enjoy your scene! Can relate to most
ReplyDeletetransitions of conversation and fatigue ! Love the heaviness- and zoning out... which is a natural progression too! Thanks.
Sounds good to me! Love the mandolin.
ReplyDeleteI am jealous, sounds like such a lovely evening
ReplyDeleteAhhh, I always did enjoy the craic here.
ReplyDeleteEVERYONE:
ReplyDeletethanks for listening. It's a strange place the tired music playing, but at the same time it's nice to sink into the embrace of it, however fuzzy and off time. seven years ago I could only dream of such nights, always loved the idea of learning an instrument and gathering people around who also played and being able to join in...
cheers for coming round ;-)
